A part of the classic trio of 55-ton 'Mechs, the Griffin has been a steady member of every Houses' military. One of the few original 'Mechs produced before the Star League was officially started the Griffin has been in service for close to 300 years.

The purpose of this armory is to show the progression of the Griffin from its first inception to its latest version.

(author's note: For everyone who has played the original BattleTech boardgame(3rd Edition) and has the old minatures, the Griffin has always been that one 'Mech that you use as much as possible. The Griffin became my favorite along with the old Thunderbolt and Crusader. For a while I prefered heavy and assault 'Mechs, as do many newer players, but eventually as I got older my preferences changed. The Griffin will always remain a favorite of mine.)

All about Griffins is based on one of the core worlds of the Federated Suns and has access to much of the new technology available to House Davion.

With this many variants, you have way to much time on your hands lol. That being said, awesome job with the griffins, one of the best mechs to be ever built.

Spectre 0 12/18/2003

I love griffins.
This seems to be quite an armory. I cannot see myself making this many variations to a design with the same name. But this has surprised me and I would like to see more.

Darkwolf 0 11/26/2003

Since you were kind enough to review my designs, I think I'll return the favor.
I'm definately a Griffin fan and so I appreciate this armory. You know, just when you think you've seen every Griffin variant there is you go and surprise us. Keep up the good work, I can't wait to see what you come up with next.

Ice Hellion 0 11/24/2003

A great place to be for all Griffin lovers.
So far all variants managed to surprise me, even if I did not like them all.
Good job Warhawk, keep the good work and surprise us more.

Overview:

The ravages of both the 1st Succession War and the 2nd caused much of the high technology of the Star League to be killed off. BattleMechs with their mountains of high technology encased in a rather frail body were almost killed off as well. Only through the adoption of the Ares Convention Articles did humankind avert a wholesale slaughter and a descent into true barbarity. Many realms were thrust into a period of time where their very survival was at stake, causing many of them to find innovative solutions for their dwindling armies.

One proposed variant of the Griffin was a part of this solution. Many of the high technology factories that produced weaponry was destroyed as a part of attacks by many of the Great Houses. This lack of reliable weaponry forced many of the Houses to limit the weaponry of their designs. Particularly hardest hit were the energy weapon manufacturers, among them PPCs becoming the most scarce of weaponry. This lack of reliable particle beam weaponry led several houses to refit 'Mechs that normally carried them with alternate weaponry.

Capabilities:

The GRF-2AC is one such variant. The original Griffin chassis remains the same, it only has a few superficial changes made to part of its structure. All extra heat sinks have been removed because of the lack of extra waste heat generation. The armor protection remains the same as does the placement of the jump jets.

The biggest change in the -2AC variant is in its main weapon. The old PPC, now extremely scarce, has been replaced by a comparable Whirlwind Autocannon normally found on Wolverines. The Wolverine, Shadow Hawk, and the Griffin are all part of the classic "trio" of medium 'Mechs. They have interchangable parts and the -2AC makes full use of that feature. The autocannon is supplied by an ammunition cassette that has double the number of shots available to the Wolverine giving it a more than adequate supply of ammunition. The distictive shoulder mounted LRM rack has been split into a pair of smaller LRM 5 racks with each missile rack mounted on an opposite shoulder mounting. Two tons of ammo in the original ammo bay provides ample reloads for each launcher.

Configuration / Variants:

Another configuration of the Griffin includes dropping the PPC as well, though it is a bit more radical. The jump jets have also been dropped as well as the extra heat sinks. The PPC has been replaced with an AC 10 with two tons of ammo. The LRM launcher has been switched out with a smaller LRM 5 with a single ton of ammo. A single medium laser is carried as a backup weapon mounted in the left arm. The armor protection has been enhanced by an additional half ton of standard plate. This variant is known as the GRF-3AC.

Battle History:

With the use of the Whirlwind Autocannon as its primary weapon, the Griffin is seen most often with Wolverines. They both can lay down an effective volley of fire, while the Wolverines can make an enemy dread closing with the force.

An engagement that took place between troops on the Liao-Marik border illustrates the usefullness of the new Griffin variant. Made up of an almost even mix of Wolverines and Griffins, the Marik force was sent on a raid into Liao space with orders to disrupt airfields and supply depots ahead of the main advance force. The raid quickly became a slugfest as the Liao defenders were well entrenched and quickly repulsed every attack. Eventually the Liao 'Mechs began to run out of ammunition, but the Marik 'Mechs namely the Griffins were able to continue firing at range. This constant harrasment along with a flank attack soon forced the Liao force to surrender. This battle was a credit to the large ammunition capacity of the Griffin along with its ability to merge well with other medium designs.

Deployment:

Currently each of the major Houses make use of several Griffin variants, though House Marik does have the largest number of the -2AC version.

Now this I like. Just as fast and well protected as a 1N, but virtually impossible to overheat. Through first hand experience I've learned just how important that last one is. However I personally would sacrifice one tone of AC ammo for a medium laser and one of the LRM 5s for an SRM 4. That way you would have a close range sting as powerful as the Wolverine, but still have a heavier long range punch.
Still an excellent design though.

Darkone2 0 11/21/2003

Another good Idea Warhawk!

Ice Hellion 0 11/20/2003

Nice redesign of the Griffin. This is really a long ranged Wolverine and now the Griffin is much like its cousins the Wolverine and the Shadow Hawk.
My critic is simply that this variant is like an undergunned Shadow Hawk.

Overview:

Another variant of the venerable Griffin used by all of the Great Houses, the -2B version represents a shift in the design philosphy of the Griffin. Meant to complement the more close range oriented -2A variant, the -2B carries enough firepower to make it deadly at most ranges.

Capabilities:

Using the original chassis and powerplant of the original GRF-1N, the -2B has a familiar signature. The main upgrading of the design is in its heat dissipation system. The increase in the heat dissipation system allows the Griffin to move at a higher rate and to fire its weaponry more often without too many more restraints than the original configuration. The armor has also been redistributed to better protect the arms and the legs.

The weaponry used by the -2B is not like that used by the -2A variant. The main weapon is the original rifle-mounted PPC. The biggest change is that the larger LRM 10 has been broken into a pair of smaller LRM 5 launchers with a single ton of ammo supporting both of them. Taking the role of the original Griffin as an overwatch design, the GRF-2B still provides the same volume of fire, but is able to keep up its barrage for a longer time period.

Configuration / Variants:

One configuration mainly used by House Steiner as a supplement to the many -2A variants used by them carries a LL in place of the PPC. A single ML provides additional firepower at close range and an additional ton of ammo for the LRM 5s prolongs the missile barrages launched by the Griffin.

Battle History:

One a raid into Liao territory by a pair of Davion companies. One of the companies was composed of -2A variants and the other was composed of the -2B variants. While the -2Bs provided long range missile fire and concentrated blasts from their PPCs, the other company closed into the killing ground where their weaponry was most effective. In the end the combined long and short range firepower of the refitted Griffins allowed the Davion forces to decimate the Liao garrison.

Deployment:

All of the Great Houses and several faction within the Periphery make use of the -2B Griffin.

I would say the firepower remains the same but I am unsure about the probability to hit with the same amount of missiles (I'll have to check this).
Otherwise the increase in the number of Heat Sinks is nicely done and I am pretty impressed by this version of the Griffin.
I am waiting to see what will come out of your armory next.

Darkone2 0 11/14/2003

A good level one mech. Also a classic way to add endurance with the same amount of Fire Power. I did the same thing with my Lionsgate Design Jayhawker JH-2. Keep up the good work.

Overview:

Once considered an assault 'Mech by the Great Houses during the Star League era, the Griffin is classed as a medium design. Unlike other medium 'Mechs, the Griffin must often fight against heavies on an almost daily basis. The overall design of the Griffin is one that has remained unchanged in its primary role of fire support for light and medium units. This versatility has allowed the Griffin to faithfully serve all of the Great Houses.

Capabilities:

The GRF-2A is simply an upgrade of the venerable -1N version. The original chassis remains as does the original fusion plant. The biggest change is a far more efficient heat dissipation circuit (14 heat sinks instead of 12). Another change is the addition of extra armor plating mainly used to beef up the chest, arms, and legs of the Griffin. A new set of jump jets with adequate cooling replaces the old jump jet model, though the jump capacity has remained the same.

The main change of the -2A variant is in the weapons suite. A large laser replaces the old PPC (each one being a House-specific manufacturer). A SRM 6 with a single ton of ammo replaces the old LRM rack. A pair of medium lasers rounds out the new weapons suite of the -2A Griffin. The new weaponry gives the Griffin a much more close range punch and when paired with standard models and with the new -2B version it is a rather fearsome combination.

Configuration / Variants:

One of several variants produced during the era of the Succession Wars several other variations in the design will be forthcoming in other readouts.

Battle History:

Used by all of the major Houses in the IS, the Griffin has been used successfully and not-so successfully in many battles. As medium 'Mechs are generally the workhorse design of all of the Houses, the Griffin does tend to see more combat than other types.

One notable engagment where the -2A featured heavily was during the waning days of the 3rd Succession War. Two companies of the Davion Light Guards was made up solely of Griffins and were used to attack a Liao held world. The two companies were made up of both the standard version and the refitted -2A version. After an uneventful grounding, the Davion force advanced on the prize that they were sent after, a small cache of armor quality diamonds. Defending the diamonds was a company of heavies supported by light armor and some infantry.

The first company composed of the -2A configuration advanced on the Liao company while supported by heavy LRM and PPC fire from the other company. As the first company closed, the light armor and infantry advanced in a screen for the Liao 'Mech company, however they took severe damage and almost 80% casualties to the infantry because of the concentrated barrages fired by the supporting Davion company. Many of the Liao 'Mechs were primarily long range combatants and were unsuited for close quarters fighting. The "new" Davion Griffins with their SRM racks and heavy laser armament were able to inflict heavy damage on the Liao 'Mechs.

After an hour of heavy fighting, the Liao garrison was savaged by the Davion unit and had fled from the field of battle. Davion casualties was light and the diamond cache was recovered. The added close range firepower, the addition of heat sinks, and the heavier armor allowed the -2A Griffins to dominate the Liao force.

Deployment:

Almost every Great House has access to the Griffin. Following the successful use of the -2A Griffin against House Liao, several other Davion units have been seen operating them. Additional sources also report that House Kurita also makes use of them, though they use a slightly different variant, the -2B model.

Very well done, good fluff, good design, love it, and only level 1 tech, great job

Darkone2 0 11/10/2003

I like it Warhawk. Nice and simple. It sloves the problem of the Griffins, no close range weapons, and with the Large Laser gives it some range too. Is there going to be a 3050 version perhaps simular to what I am doing with the Coventry AFFC Depot?

Lars 0 11/6/2003

Nice to see a level 1 design; It really reminds me of one of the old Wolverine variants, though. I can't remember the designation right now though. Anyways good knife-fighter, nice mobility, only thing lacking is the range. Maybe drop 2 heat sinks to up the Large laser to a PPC? (The though, you'd have my GRF-1D Griffin up at Lars Corp... Hmm...)

Overview:

The -4D variant of the Griffin was developed by Steiner engineers working with several MechWarriors of the Donegal Guards. While they liked the firepower of the -4C variant, they felt that it lacked enough firepower especially after the ammo was expended. Using both BattleROMs and first hand testimonials from Warriors that piloted the Griffin, Steiner engineers came up with the -4D variant.

Capabilities:

Rather than building the -4D from the ground-up as a new 'Mech, the Steiner engineers decided to simply modify existing -1N Griffins to this version. As such the only thing that really has changed with the design is the reallocated armor protection and the revised weapons suite.

The main weapon no longer is a PPC, but has been replaced with a large laser in a similar mounting. The shoulder mounted LRM 10 has been upgraded to a larger LRM 15 with a similar ammunition storage bay. Visually the -4D is very similar to the -1N often confusing the battlecomputers on opposing 'Mechs. The new weapons mix also makes the Griffin feared as a scout hunter/killer.

Configuration / Variants:

Another odd variant of the Griffin only House Steiner makes use of it. One of the few lighter designs in constant use by Steiner forces, the Griffin is well regarded by many of its pilots. As such there are few variants of this particular variant.

Battle History:

One note worthy battle that involved the -4D Griffin took place during a raid by elements of House Marik's Ducal Guard. The elite unit was sent in a reprisal raid against several border worlds in Steiner space. The Ducal Guard didn't encounter any resistance until about five days after their dropships grounded when they ran into a scouting party of the 12th Lyran Guard. The Lyran scouting party was able to hold off the larger Marik force for several hours until reinforcements could arrive.

Several Griffins of the -4C type were spotted with the Marik force so the Steiner commander sent her small number of -4Ds to neutralize them. At first the LRM barrages proved to be rather deadly for both sides, at least until the -4Ds came within range of their heavy lasers. Repeated hits from several heavy lasers sent several of the Marik 'Mechs to their graves. The battered Steiner force was able to neutralize the fire support element of the Ducal Guard. Because of their similar profile to the -4C, several -4Ds were able to inflitrate the Marik supply area and were able to destroy most of the supplies for the Ducal Guard.

Deployment:

House Steiner is the only Great House that makes full use of the -4D Griffin. Its strong showing against House Marik has raised its stock in the eyes of many commanders in the Steiner military.

Overview:

An odd configuration of the Griffin used by both House Marik and House Steiner, the -4C is used mainly as a highly-mobile missile platform. While unusual in its overall design, the -4C provides both Marik and Steiner forces with a highly mobile 'Mech that has enough speed to keep up with other medium 'Mechs and has enough firepower to keep heavy 'Mechs pinned down for a long time. Complements other fire support 'Mechs rather nicely with its heavy missile rack and with plenitful ammunition.

Capabilities:

Using the basic chassis of the original -1N Griffin has saved engineers working for both House Marik and House Steiner a good deal of time when the -4C was developed. Though rather than being a joint project, the -4C was first built by House Marik, though several salvaged 'Mechs were taken by Steiner forces. The only major change made to the chassis was the loss of a single heat sink from the original heat dissipation circuit. Everything else remains the same as the -1N variant.

The biggest change is with the weaponry of the -4C. The familiar tube mounted LRM rack has been replaced with a missile rack similar to the used by the Archer. The massive LRM 20 mounted in the right torso is supplied with three tons of ammunition giving the Griffin massive firepower at long range for a long sustained barrage. As back-up a pair of medium lasers are mounted where the original PPC once sat.

Configuration / Variants:

An odd configuration of the Griffin, but effective. The -4C is a one-of-kind factory refit being produced in large numbers in both the Lyran Commonwealth and in the Free Worlds League. A single variant has been seen that replaces the massive LRM 20 rack with a slightly smaller LRM 15. A heat sink has been added and the pair of medium lasers have been replaced with a large laser.

Battle History:

Several battles have occured that have had Griffins of the -4C variant squaring off against one another. Largely the battles have not been conclusive with the -4Cs cancelling each other out.

Deployment:

Both House Marik and House Steiner make full use of the -4C Griffin, though Houses Liao and Kurita have been trying to salvage them off of the battlefield but with poor results.

Overview:

A slightly more radical variant of the Griffin that has spread throughout each of the Great Houses during the 3rd War. Like many of the other medium 'Mechs used in the IS, the Griffin has become the workhorse for most of the Houses' militaries. The -4B was developed to replace heavy 'Mechs or at least to stand up to a heavy 'Mech in combat. While still possessing the speed and maneuverability of its size, the Griffin now boasts increased armor and a weapons package that can hit at all ranges.

Capabilities:

The basic chassis of the Griffin remains unchanged from the original developed centuries before. The original CoreTek fusion engine still powers the Griffin to a maximum ground speed of 85.4 kph and the modified jump jets still can provide a jump capacity of 120-meters. The heat dissipation circuit remains untouched, though an Alpha Strike will cause the 'Mech to overheat rather badly. However in the hands of a capable MechWarrior, the Griffin can sufficiently engage any target at just about any combat range. The biggest change that was made to the Griffin is with the armor protection, the -4A carries 99% of its maximum armor. This heavy armor is needed as the Griffin is reguarly used against heavy 'Mechs on the field of battle.

The main weapon of the Griffin has been changed from the still rare PPC to a more commonly available large laser. Backing up the large laser the Griffin mounts a medium laser and a small laser. The missile weaponry of the -4B is a mix of both long and short ranged missiles. The familiar tube-mounting contains both missile racks. An LRM 5 and a SRM 4 currently resides there with each a single ton of ammo for each launcher supported there as well. With a weapons mix more commonly found on the Shadow Hawk, the Griffin once again is a good complement to the other classic 55-ton 'Mechs.

Configuration / Variants:

A popular variant with those warriors who have to fight heavier 'Mechs there are no true variants of the -4B. The slightly modular nature of the LRM 5 and the SRM 4 has been discussed many times, with the two launchers being interchangable. Several field variants have been listed as having either two LRM racks or two SRM racks, though these are usually made by the individual warriors themselves rather than as a factory modification.

Battle History:

Several occassions during the end of the 2nd War and during the 3rd War have highlighted the abilities of the -4B Griffin.

Elements of House Steiner's Skye Rangers have made use of the -4B Griffin in their raids against both House Marik and House Kurita. During one such raid, Leutant Luther Voss of the 22nd Skye Rangers was credited with an unusual kill. While leading his support lance against the 14th Pesht Regulars, he spotted a Warhammer leading a similar unit coming towards his position. His opponent called out a challenge in the samurai tradition, which Voss readily accepted surprising his lance members and the Kurita MechWarrior as well. The additional armor of the -4B, especially the chest armor, gave Voss some protection from the Warhammer's PPCs until he could close in and bring his SRMs to bear. The fight soon became a slugging match with SRMs and lasers being traded almost constantly. Only through careful maneuvering and the judicious use of his jump jets did Voss finally defeat his opponent, though many outside observers would note that the heavier armor of the -4B likely had just as much to do as Voss' skills as a pilot.

The heavier armor of the -4B still does give a Griffin pilot the ability to routinely take on heavier opponents. A member of House Marik's Regulan Hussars found this out to his dismay. While advancing against a vanguard force from the 10th Lyran Guard, he thought that he could take on a Stalker and win. Many would note that it seems rather suicidal for him to think that he could take on an assault 'Mech, but like many Centurion pilots he too thought that his armor protection would protect him against a heavier opponent. His misfortune was that the pilot of the Stalker was an elite MechWarrior who knew his 'Mech like nothing else. Even with the higher ground speed and jump jets, the Regulan MechWarrior made several mistakes. At first he tried to engage the Stalker at long range, then tried to close to medium range forgetting that a Stalker is best used at medium-to-long range. The Stalker pilot quickly took down the Griffin before heavy damage was inflicted on his 'Mech.

While the -4B has exceptionally heavy armor, it is best to note that it is better used against 'Mechs of a similar mass or against light 'Mechs. While mounting more armor than some heavies or even assault 'Mechs, the Griffin just doesn't carry the same amount of weaponry as its larger compatriots.

Deployment:

Deployed with all of the Great Houses, the Griffin is a favored medium 'Mech used be many MechWarriors.

LOL, not sure about the Stalker, but definately a powerful design, good all around firepower and heavy armor. Definately a keeper.

Another good all around Griffin with quite some armor. I do not think I would go for a Stalker but it is really a nightmare for headhunters.

Overview:

A rather strange variant of the Griffin found to be used by several units in the Davion Brigade of Guards, the GRF-4A represents a more energy weapon equipped version of the Griffin. A resurgence in higher technology following the end of the 2nd Succession War and the limited nature of the 3rd War allowed for a modification to the Griffin.

(author's note: It may look like an IS version of the Griffin IIC, but really isn't. This graphic was closest to what I see this Griffin looking like. Though the weapons mix is a pretty good representation of what the Griffin IIC carries.)

Capabilities:

The chassis of the -4A remains the same as with all of the other Griffin variants. The original CoreTek 275 engine powers the -4A to the same top speed of the -1N while a slightly reduced number of jump jet nozzles propels the -4A to a maximum of 120-meters. The heat dissipation circuit has also gone through a change with the addition of a single heat sink to the old circuit. Even though an additional heat sink, for a total of 13, the Griffin still has some heat problems. Additional armor plating along with some cosmetic changes gives the -4A a different external appearance.

The main weapon of the -4A is a Magna Mk III large laser mounted in a heavily protected bay in the center torso. The familiar tube-mounted LRM launcher has been replaced by a pair of smaller LRM 5 launchers in a torso mounting opposite each other. A Magna Mk II medium laser is carried in each arm.

Configuration / Variants:

A relatively new, by comparison to other 3025 'Mechs, design the -4A doesn't really have any new variants. Very few of the -4As exist in modern times with the vast majority of them relegated as museum pieces.

Battle History:

A single notable occassion where the -4A took place was against elements of House Kurita's Galedon Regulars. A heavy company of 'Mechs supported by a single platoon of infantry faced off against a 3rd Guards combat command. The combat command was made up of two medium 'Mech lances, supported by a company of light armor, and a battalion of jump infantry. A majority of the 'Mechs were -4A Griffins supported by several JagerMechs and a single Warhammer. The Davion commander sent his Griffins around in pincer movement against the entrenched Kurita unit. The jump infantry successfully held up their Kurita counterparts and even were able to take out two of their 'Mechs with demolition charges.

The real combat took place among the 'Mechs and the armor. With the JagerMechs laying down a significant volume of fire against the Regular's fortifications, the Griffins advanced using cover where possible. The massed fire from their combined LRM launchers helped to keep the Regulars pinned into place. The center torso mounting of the large lasers on the Griffins saved more than one pilot. On several notable occassions, a Griffin pilot lost his 'Mech's right arm to concentrated fire, but was able to continue fighting because his main weapon no longer was arm mounted. In the end the unigue weapons placement and the strength of their armor allowed the Davion combat command to prevail over the heavier, but slower Kurita force.

Deployment:

Up til the 4th Succession War, -4A Griffins could be found with several of the RCTs that made up the Davion Brigade of Guards. After the war, many of these were placed into mothballs or given to regional militias. As of 3067 most of the -4As have been scrapped.

Overview:

Another specialty configuration created during the Succession Wars, the GRF-3AC represents another modification made to the Griffin due to the loss of high technology. A slightly more radical modification of the Griffin than that of the -2AC variant, the -3AC mounts a single small energy weapon as a back-up to the heavier autocannon. The biggest concession made was the removal of the Griffin's jump jets.

Capabilities:

Based around the original Griffin chassis, the -3AC variant only makes small changes to it. The massive CoreTek engine still powers the Griffin, though the jump jets have been removed to free up more of the 'Mech's mass for more equipment. The heat dissipation circuit has also been decreased to the standard engine loadout because of the reduced heat signature of the Griffin. Another element that has been changed with the Griffin is that it now supports an additional half ton of armor beefing up the legs and the arms.

The weaponry of the -3AC variant of the Griffin has been changed with ballistic weaponry replacing the original energy ones. The arm mounted PPC has been replaced with an AC 10, a comparable trade-off with range and heat being reduced but damage remaining about the same. The distinctive shoulder-mounted LRM launcher has been reduced to a smaller LRM 5 rack. Both tons of ammunition for the AC and the single ton of ammo for the LRM rack is now stored in the right torso. A single medium laser has been added to the left arm, though the mounting is not quite the same as a factory refit. The control and power cables have been attached to the underside of the arm and spot-welded into place. As a consequence of this mounting, few pilots trust the laser and only use it when they are retreating or out of ammo.

Configuration / Variants:

There are countless variants of the Griffin that were made over the centuries of the Succession Wars, though only the stranger variants have been found by researchers working for House Davion.

Battle History:

Unlike some of the other variants of the Griffin, the -3AC has not been used as heavily as the others. Most of the time they are deployed as guards for dropships or as close combat 'Mechs during raids. The only place where the -3AC has appeared in recent years is in the gladiatorial arenas of Solaris VII. The heavy autocannon and the laser provided heavy firepower in close and the small LRM rack allowed the warrior to cut off an opponents escape.

Deployment:

Only seen in low numbers with a number of individual warriors on Solaris VII, the -3AC is extremely rare everywhere else in the IS and even in the Periphery.

This I like even more, it reminds me of the Wolverine design I just posted, of course I kept the jets at cost of the launcher, but I think your system might work better. Seriously though, I'd use it.

Darkone2 0 11/25/2003

I'll buy this one for a dollar, LOL. Warhawk seriously I like and I would use it in tight quarters.

Ice Hellion 0 11/24/2003

I really like this one. It is fast, has a AC/10 and some complementary weapons. I do not think that the JJ are missed in this one.
What else can a Davion ask for?

Overview:

The -4D2 variant of the Griffin was developed by Steiner-Davion engineers working with several MechWarriors of the Donegal Guards and the Davion Guards. While they liked the firepower of the -4D variant, they felt that it lacked enough firepower especially after the ammo was expended. Using both BattleROMs and first hand testimonials from Warriors that piloted the Griffin, Steiner-Davion engineers came up with the -4D2 variant.

The Griffin has come into its own among the army of the Federated Commonwealth. The unlocking of the GDL's historic memory code has allowed Steiner-Davion engineers to dramatically upgrade several of their old designs. Among these upgraded 'Mechs is the Griffin. Even though another Griffin factory was seized by the Fed-Com during the 4th War, it was tooled for the Marik model of the Griffin, many pilots disliked this model because of its relatively short-ranged armament and many felt that the more expensive XL engine that it used was not worth the loss in survivability nor the cost of the new units.

The original -4D was extremely popular with Steiner MechWarriors and those few Davion warriors who got to pilot them also praised the efficiency of the 'Mech's design. With technical specs of the original -4D in hand, technicians were able to upgrade the performance of the Griffin without resorting to use an expensive XL engine, nor did they make the 'Mech lose its long ranged punch.

Capabilities:

Rather than building the -4D2 from the ground-up as a new 'Mech, the Steiner-Davion engineers decided to simply modify existing -4D Griffins to this version. Several small changes have been made with the general layout of the revised -4Ds. The heat exchange system has been switched out with the new double-chambered design, even with the loss of a heat sink the new system can dissipate around 80% more heat than the old system. The other change came with the introduction of ferro-fibrous armor along with CASE to protect against ammunition explosions. Even though the -4D2 carries a lower mass of armor, it does have better protection thanks to the addition of the ferro-fibrous.

The main weapon no longer is a standard large laser, but has been replaced with an ER large laser in a similar mounting. The shoulder mounted LRM 15 has been upgraded with an Artemis IV FC system to improve accuracy. Visually the -4D2 is very similar to the -4D often confusing the battlecomputers on opposing 'Mechs. The new weapons mix enhances the -4D2's role as a scout hunter/killer.

Configuration / Variants:

A single variant has been proposed by several Steiner commanders to give the -4D2 some more punch on the battlefield. The spare DHS along with the Artemis IV FCS has been dropped with the ER LL upgraded to an ER PPC. The only fault that has been found with this variant is that it overheats rather badly when the jump jets are used after an Alpha-Strike. The increased range of the ER PPC does tend to make-up for it, though some commanders still prefer to use the upgraded models coming from Earthwerks if they wish to have an ER PPC instead of the ER LL.

Battle History:

The newly upgraded -4D2's have been sent primarily to several units stationed along both the Marik border and along the Liao border. In late 3051, several of the Fed-Com RCTs were sent against the Clans. In their ranks were several companies of the new -4D2 Griffins. Their first "Baptism of Fire" came when a company of the new model Griffins were deployed along the Fed-Com flank to defend against an attack from that direction. Two stars of Jade Falcon scout OmniMechs tried to force their way through the Fed-Com flanks, but were stopped for a small while as the Griffins used their more accurate LRMs to great effect. As the scouts tried to close with the force they ran head long into a salvo of large laser beams that felled over half of their number. By this time, the Fed-Com commander sent a company of armor to reinforce his flank, though by the time that they got there nine light OmniMechs were smoking on the ground with only three Fed-Com Griffins destroyed by Clan fire.

Deployment:

The vast majority of the upgraded -4D2's have been spotted within several of the regiments that were loyal to House Steiner before the merger with House Davion. A large number of these 'Mechs have also turned up in several March Militias mainly due to their lower cost when compared to the upgraded Griffins coming off of Earthwerk's production lines.

This is a great Griffin refit (Or variant if you like.). The only thing that I can suggest is down grading the LRM-15 (And removing the LRM-15 ammo.) to a LRM-10 with two tons of LRM-10 ammo. Then you would have two tons left over for two Medium Lasers or ER Medium Lasers.
But I would still use this Griffin refit as is anyways because it is very good and is supported by rock soild fluff. If only my fluff could be so good.

Overview:

The Griffin has remained a popular 'Mech in the armies of the Successor Lords. Host to countless variants, the Griffin was once thought of as an assault 'Mech until heavier designs became available in the Successor States. The flexibility of the Griffin along with its heavy armor for its size made it a popular design used throughout the Succession Wars. One of the odder variants used by all of the Great Houses replaced almost all of the original armament with older, surplus weaponry in an attempt to reduce the Griffins dependance on high technology like the PPC that it carried as its primary weapon system. The new variant, dubbed the GRF-3AC, replaced the arm mounted PPC with a House-specific AC/10. The massive weapon proved to be popular with many of its pilots, though its reliance on ammunition reduced the combat endurance of the Griffin and made it more dependent on resupply on the battlefield. The reduction in size of the original model's LRM rack also hampered the -3AC's in-direct fire capabilities, though the plentiful ammunition available to the smaller rack did make it slightly more popular because of the reduced ammunition load. The biggest addition of the -3AC was the fact that it carried a medium laser as its secondary weapon system, which provided many pilots with a back-up weapon so lacking on the original -1N model.

The decade leading up to the Clan Invasion was heralded as a true age of discovery. As the Grey Death Memory Core was studied and many of the achievements found in it was finally put into production again, many BattleMechs were once again able to be produced again and countless others were slated for upgrading and improvement. Several of the Great Houses scrambled in a race to see who could quickly upgrade their 'Mechs before their neighbors could. The Draconis Combine and the Federated Commonwealth both had an advantage over the other Great Houses simply because they both had copies of the Grey Death Memory Core and their researchers had unlocked much of it already.

Of the many designs upgraded during this period of frenzied development, the Griffin was chosen for a substantial upgrade to its capabilities. Out of all the upgrades planned for the Griffin, it is interesting to note that the radical GRF-3AC was chosen for an upgrade to it's systems by several of the Great Houses who had access to the advanced construction techniques and the technology necessary to upgrade the 'Mech.

Capabilities:

One of the first pieces of LosTech generally available in the rebuilding IS was the reintroduction of Zero-G industries. The production of endo steel for 'Mech internal structures was finally made possible again thanks to the rennaissance in Zero-G manufacturing. The decision to build a prototype of the GRF-3AC2 out of endo steel made the 'Mech far more sturdy than any other model and it soon proved to be a worthy test-bed for several new pieces of technology. The amazingly powerful CoreTek 275 XL engine gives the Griffin the same ground speed, but with an incredible reduction in mass thanks to some subtle shifting of internal components and several advances in shielding. It is interesting to note that the original jump jets have been retained, though they have been upgraded slightly with a more efficient fuel mixture. The original heat sinks have been removed in favor of a comparable system, though they do use about 30% fewer chambers which helps to reduce the overall cost of the system. The heavy armor protection, which has been a hallmark of the Griffin, has been made even heavier with additional armor plating. The reintroduction of ferro fibrous armor has allowed for the reintroduction of CASE to protect against ammunition explosions. While the GRF-3AC2 is still somewhat vulnerable to ammunition explosions, the pilot does not need fear for his life with CASE used on his 'Mech.

The main weapon used by the GRF-3AC was the massive AC/10, on the upgraded model, it has been replaced with the Star League original LB-10X autocannon. The lighter and more heat efficient LB-10X boasts increased range equal to that of the original Griffin's PPC, but with a heat signature 90% smaller. A whopping three tons of ammunition is carried by the -3AC2, with the ammo divided between the 'Mech's arm and side torso. Both sections are protected by the Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment mounted in the right torso. One of the biggest changes to this Griffin model is that the original LRM rack has been re-added to the 'Mech and has been made even more accurate. The inclusion of an Artemis IV FCS gives the Griffin a more accurate missile rack and the addition of two tons of ammunition in the CASE-protected bay gives it longevity on the battlefield.

Rounding out the weaponry of the GRF-3AC2 is the same medium laser used on the original model. It remains the only energy weapon used by this model. The biggest fanfare given to this design is centered around the inclusion of the newly rediscovered Guardian ECM suite carried in the 'Mech's left torso. The broadband jammer gives the Griffin additional protection within the minimum range of its LRM rack and can be used to shield its lance mates as well in combat.

Configuration / Variants:

A number of upgrades have been planned by most of the Successor States who have access to the technology needed for refitting the various Griffin variants. The ComStar produced Technical Readout for 3050 lists only the most common variant of the Griffin. A few other variants of the more popular designs can be found here in "All About Griffins," though this is far from the most exhaustible source for information about the Griffin.

Battle History:

The upgraded GRF-3AC2 was used sparingly in only a few regiments near the initial Clan Invasion border. The vast amount of high technology used in the few prototypes built made them rare on all but the most interior worlds. Following the meeting with Wolf's Dragoons following the death of the ilKhan, production facilities throughout the IS were devoted only to the standard model of the Griffin, relegating the GRF-3AC2 only to the history books and a few interior border worlds garrison forces.

Deployment:

Deployed with all of the Great Houses following the summit on Outreach, though many were later scrapped to provide essential parts for other upgraded Griffins.

Nice to see that All about Griffins is back in business.
I like the concept of this variant but I think you miss the capacity to use the holes made by the LRM and the cluster ammo with one big shot to destroy your opponent.

Sold refit. I really like the large amounts of ammo for both the LRM and LBX cannon, will still have plenty of round left by the time most other ammo dependent designs have run dry.

With the unlocking of the Gray Death Memory Core, many new technologies have been making their way to the BattleMech manufacturing complex. The new -2A2 Griffin makes use of several new technologies which have only made the design deadlier with the inclusion of Star League technology. The -2A2 is the first Griffin produced on Torrence that makes use of the new technology. Depending on well the new 'Mech performs on the battlefield, other variants based off of the older standard tech designs may follow.

Capabilities:

The GRF-2A2 is an upgrade of the -2A version. The original chassis, engine, and some of the original system components remain, while others have been upgraded using the new Star League gear. The biggest change of the -2A2 is that the heat dissipation circuit has been rebuilt with advanced double chambered heat sinks. The weight savings of switching to the new DHS has allowed the designers to give the Griffin maximum armor protection and has also allowed for the inclusion of CASE to protect the missile reloads.

The weapons load of the -2A2 has several new weapon systems that have just been made available for general use in the Federated Commonwealth and in the Draconis Combine. The old arm mounted large laser has been replaced with a new ER version. The added range more than makes up for the added heat. The pair of medium lasers remain untouched and provide the -2A2 with good close-in firepower. The old SRM launcher on the shoulder has been replaced with a pair of Federated Super Streak SRM 2s with a single ton of ammo for both racks. The Draconis Combine variant makes use of Hovertec Streak SRMs.

The electronics suite of the -2A2 has been upgraded as well. In addition to a new communications system, a Beagle Active Probe has been added. The addition of the BAP allows the -2A2 to function as a heavy scout. The intuitive nature of the Beagle system also makes the -2A2 invaluable as a training 'Mech.
(author's note: The memory capability of the BAP stores not only the layout of the most recent opponents, but the system can predict how the unit will fight. By using the control stick, a pilot can make changes in how he reacts to the opponent and the BAP can show how the enemy might react. This feature makes the BAP highly sought after as a training tool.)

Configuration / Variants:

The second new variant of the Griffin produced on Torrence, the -2A2 is a practical demonstration of how Star League technology can be used to upgrade older 'Mechs. The first upgrade attempted was simply the upgrade of a standard -1N Griffin with the new Star League equipment.

Battle History:

With the arrival of the Clans, new technology was sent to the frontlines to help hold back the onslaught. Several lances of the new -2A2 were manufactured and rushed into service with several units that were being relocated into the Lyran-half of the Fed Com. Going to pilots who originally piloted Griffins, the -2A2s were greatly appreciated by those units using the new 'Mechs. The increased range and close-in firepower of the new units made them vital in several battles against the Clans. While they were useful in sporatic encounters with OmniMechs, the refitted Griffins were not enough to slow down the Clan juggernaut.

Deployment:

Most of the operational -2A2 Griffins are in the Lyran-half of the Federated Commonwealth helping to bolster front-line units fighting the Clans. The similar models being used by the Draconis Combine are being used in the same fashion. The models used by House Marik are primarily being sold to the Draconis Combine.

Long range firepower and precise fire at close range. This is a good Lvl 2 upgrade for your Griffin.
I am lucky that my designs from the Clans have superior ranges, otherwise I would be in trouble fighting your Griffins.

The GRF-2N is the first Griffin variant produced on Torrence that makes use of the new Star League equipment that is becoming available for general use. Several new manufacturing techniques have been used on the -2N as well as some upgraded weaponry.

Capabilities:

With the reintroduction of Star League technology, the Federated Commonwealth has revived a large portion of the dormant facilities that were shutdown due to a lack of spare parts. In orbit in both the Torrence and Galax systems, Endo Steel II manufacturing plants have been renovated and are now producing their products for several new designs.

The -2N makes use of Endo Steel II to both lighten and strengthen the chassis of the Griffin. The original engine has been retained for ease of maintenance. The old heat dissipation circuit has been replaced with one that can dissipate 200% more heat than the old system. The weight savings of switching to Endo Steel and making use of DHS has allowed the Griffin design team to armor the 'Mech with as close to the maximum amount that the 'Mech can hold. Another recovered piece of hardware is the reintroduction of CASE, with the LRM ammunition being protected by the CASE.

The weapon system of the -2N has changed slightly. The main weapon is still a PPC carried in a rifle-like housing on the right arm. The missile rack now has Artemis IV FCS which makes it more accurate. A single medium laser has been added in a torso mounting providing an energy back-up, though if the 'Mech is used as it should be the laser would be seldom used.

Configuration / Variants:

After the success of the -2N, several other variants of the Griffin has been authorized for production.

Battle History:

The familiar Griffins that guard the throne on Tharkad have been switched out for the new -2N variant. The new variant has only been used against IS opponents at the time of the Clan Invasion. Several of the units that were deployed against the initial Clan attacks have been assigned several -2N and -2A2 Griffins to bolster their ranks.

Deployment:

All of the elite commands within the Federated Commonwealth have been seen using the -2N Griffin. Its popularity among several units and well as its low cost has made it a very sought after design, though because of the Clan War many of the -2N's are going to former -1N pilots primarily in the Lyran-theater.

I like any mech that uses a PPC to "pepper off"(to kill)the oppnet, really good simple and solid design.

Overview:

During Operation Revival, the Clans rolled over any defenders in their path taking large numbers of destroyed and damaged 'Mechs into their control. In a program different than the IIC refits developed by the Clan for their second line program, the Griffin (upgrade) was developed as a means to increase the Clan's defensive garrison by using captured enemy machines. Unlike the IIC refits, the field refits make use of both Clan and IS equipment in many cases only the weaponry and some basic subsystems are of Clan manufacture with the rest of the 'Mech composed of its original equipment.

The Griffin was well received by many of the Successor State militaries and during the initial Clan Invasion a large number were destroyed by the Clans and an even larger number were captured. The first field refit Griffins were produced by the Ghost Bears. Of all the of the Invading Clans, the Ghost Bears were the least prepared for the invasion. Lacking sufficient resources, the Bears were forced to use IS machines in several of their garrison units. A cadre of technicians and Clan engineers set-out to create the best possible upgrade for the countless Griffins captured.

A triage setup was used by the Clans technicians with the least damaged 'Mechs being refit first and the worst off supplying parts for the rest. Using this method, Clan Ghost Bear was able to supply its garrison units with a large number of upgraded Griffins. The other Invading Clans soon began to see the wisdom of this method of upgrading, especially so for the Jade Falcons and to a lesser extent with the Wolves. The Federated Commonwealth made use of a large number of standard model Griffins and several other upgraded models. In their rush to capture IS worlds, both the Falcons and Wolves gained a large number of captured Griffins. Some of the 'Mechs were traded to the Ghost Bears in return for material goods and minerals, while others were upgraded for their defensive garrisons.

This technical readout is for the most common of all the Griffin models, the -1N.

Capabilities:

The basic structure of Griffin (upgrade) remains the same as the base model Griffins captured by the Clans. The original powerplant remains giving the 'Mech average speed and maneuverability for its weight. The jump jets were retained giving the 'Mech a tactical advantage in an urban setting or in built-up terrain. The heat exchange system was traded out for a Clan manufactured one that uses double chambered heat exchangers. While it was more costly to use the Clan system, it was deemed necessary due to the large amounts of waste heat produced by the main weapon system. Because of the lighter mass of the Clan double heat sinks all of the extra heat sinks have been dropped in order to mount more weaponry and armor. The armor protection was increased by a ton of standard plate making the upgrade more capable for taking damage than the original model. As Clan ammunition is packaged with CASE, the Clan system was added to the internal structure of the reworked Griffins.

The main weapon of the Griffin (upgrade) remains a particle beam weapon, in this case a Clan ER PPC provides immense firepower. The high heat produced by this massive weapon is the primary reason why the heat exchange system was replaced with a Clan manufactured one. The original missile rack has been upgraded to a much larger Clan manufactured LRM 20. The accuracy of the system has been enhanced by the mounting of an Artemis IV FCS. The ammunition bay also has been enlarged to support three tons of ammunition for the LRM rack.

(author's note: The price and BV have been given for comparison purposes only.)

Configuration / Variants:

One variant used by the Wolf Clan makes use of a large pulse laser in place of the ER PPC.

While the Smoke Jaguars have captured a number of Griffins from the Draconis Combine, they have not followed with the practice of re-arming them with Clan equipment. Always one to ignore their defensive units, the Jaguars make use of the original model Griffins captured. Several second-line Jaguar warriors who have been assigned one of these unmodified 'Mechs have taken it upon their techs to have them modified with at least some Clan technology. Several models carrying ER large lasers with additional heat sinks have been seen in several Smoke Jaguar garrison clusters. For those techs who cannot mount advanced energy weaponry on their warrior's 'Mechs, they generally replace the old LRM 10 rack with a Clan LRM 20. While the two tons of ammunition may not seem to be sufficient for IS standards, the Clans are used to more fluid style of warfare and the ammunition is enough for most engagements and because of the deployment of their 'Mechs near supply lines it isn't as much of a problem as thought of.

Battle History:

While being a member of a garrison unit does not provide a Clan warrior with many chances of acquiring honor, raids made by IS units have brought these second-line warriors some hope of acquiring honor on the battlefield. While many of the raids have been to deny the Clans material sources of the worlds that they have captured, some of the raids by the more adept House warriors have been made to try to reclaim some of the captured worlds. Nowhere else is this evident as in the Draconis Combine. Because of their warrior code many Combine warriors continue to fight on against the Clan invaders in any way that they can. These raids and pin-pricks were one of the reasons that some Smoke Jaguar warriors have had their Griffins modified to carry at least some Clan weaponry. Many of these ER LL and LRM 20 -equipped Griffins have fought against several Combine units with surprising skill and have given many other Jaguar warriors a reason to have their 'Mechs upgraded (even a little).

Deployment:

Deployed primarily with the initial four Invading Clans, the upgraded Griffin has also been spotted with the three reserve Clans that have been spotted operating in the IS after the Year of Peace.

Damn clanners, always taking our mechs and making them better...Seriously though, good fluff, simple clan refit but much better than the original. Good job.
