I've had an odd itch to play old Mechcommander for the longest time, but I found out last year that newer machines can't run mechcommander 2 at all, despite compatibility modes, windowed mode, and deleting the auto-video card detector. Has anyone gotten them to work on Windows 10?

With Win 7, you could download XP mode (basically running a Virtual Machine on your PC) that let you play older games. I did the same with Civ 2 Gold.
My CD game PC is a Windows 7 system, so I don't know how much of this can help, but my copy of MC2 tends to have two functionalities: 1) Monochrome or 2) Extreme lag; it is rare for it to work right for me.
As for Mechwarrior 3, that one works (I think; been months since I last tried it.).

Doesn't work. As Captian mentioned, my game was single-digit frames despite what mode I ran it in.
