Following the wholesale immigration of Clan Ghost Bear to the Inner Sphere,
which resulted in the establishment of the Ghost Bear Dominion in 3060, Khan
Bjorn Jorgensson decided that symbols were needed to mark the beginning of a
new era for his Clan. One such symbol was the 65-ton Arcas, a second-line
battlemech that stepped off the production line in 3061, that was produced in
the same factory as the Ursus. However, the Ghost Bear Khan also felt that a
similar symbol should also be created for front-line duty, and tasked a group
consisting of hand-picked Rasalhague natives and members from the Scientist and
Technician caste, known as the B-team, with its creation.
After looking through their options, the B-team decided to pull a "Cougar", and
modify a proven design into an even deadlier war machine; in this case, they
would chose the Executioner Omnimech as the basis for their design. One of the
first changes that the B-team did was to drop the built-in MASC and jump jets
of the original Executioner, freeing up tonnage for armor and pod space.
Furthermore, the B-team also swapped the Ferro-Fibrous armor with standard
plating, and swapped the Standard chassis for an Endo-Steel version. Finally,
the B-team decided to add a "bear cowl" on top of the cockpit. as a nod to a
unique Ghost Bear rite of passage known as the Clawing Ritual, while giving
their 'mech a unique look.
After creating a successful set of prototypes, the only thing left for the
B-team was to give their creation a proper name. The B-team played around with
a few suggestions, with mundane names such as Warbear and Ursa, as well as
silly ones such as "Smokey" and "Winnie the Pooh". Eventually, one of the
B-team's Rasalhague members suggested the name "Bärsärk", a word that was
derived from the Old Norse words ber-serk, which means "Bear Shirt". The rest
of the B-team liked it and thus chose that name for the B-team's creation.
After being presented, and impressed, with the "Barsark", Khan Jorgensson
authorized the new Assault Omnimech's production. Manufactured in Alshain
Battleworx, the first batch of "Barsark" Omnimechs rolled off the assembly
lines in early 3063, and has since become a integral part of the Ghost Bear
Touman.

Capabilities:
Best described as the complementary opposite of the Executioner, the Barsark
could dish out a high degree of punishment, with 40 tons of pod space available
for weapons and equipment, while still being able to keep up with its
progenitor; the base chassis also has an impressive cooling capacity, with 15
double heat sinks built-in the Barsark's 380 XL Fusion Engine. Also, the
Barsark has 17.5 tons of Standard Armor for protection, allowing the 'mech to
absorb a high amount of punishment as well.
In its Prime Configuration, the Barsark is deadly at any range. An ER Large
Laser on each arm, and an LRM-20 launcher in the left torso provide a
formidablel long-range attack, while an Ultra AC/20 in the right torso,
complemented by a Medium Pulse Laser on each arm and one in the center torso,
provide close-range fire power. A Small Pulse Laser in the left torso is
included as well to protect against infantry attacks. Both the LRM and the
Autocannon are well-supplied with 3 tons of ammunition each, the result of
lessons learned from logistical issues during Operation Revival. Finally, two
more double heat sinks, for a total of 17, help vent waste heat.
Designed to pummel enemies from afar, Configuration A of the Barsark features a
pair of ER PPCs and a Gauss Rifle as its main guns, all tied to a targeting
computer. An Anti-Missile System on each side torso helps protect against
enemy missiles, while a pair of SRM-4 launchers provide close-range defence. A
total of 18 double heat sinks help keep waste heat under wraps.
Configuration B is a city brawler, with a trio of Large Pulse Lasers, one per
arm and one in the center torso, as its main weapons. This is supported by an
SRM-6 launcher in each side torso, and two Small Pulse Lasers are meant to deal
with soft targets. Besides the weapons, this configuration also sports an ECM
Suite to counter enemy electronics, while an Active Probe helps detect hidden
units. Furthermore, paired jump jets on each side torso helps the Barsark get
around the tight urban confines. With 20 double heat sinks, waste heat would
be less of an issue, in all but the most dire situations.
Configuration C is an alternate urban configuration that was inspired by the
Kodiak 2, with its mobility enhanced courtesy of four jump jets. An ER PPC in
the center torso is its main long-range weapon, while close-combat weapons
include an Ultra AC/20 in the right torso, a Streak SRM-6 launcher in the left
side torso, and paired ER Medium Lasers on each arm. Additional equipment
include an ECM Suite to counter enemy electronics, and a Small Pulse Laser for
anti-infantry/vehicle/battlearmor duty. This configuration is kept cool by
sixteen double heat sinks.
Emphasizing flexibility, the Configuration D of the Barsark features an ATM- 9
launcher on the left torso, capable of firing effective missiles at any range.
This is complemented by an LB 10-X Autocannon in the right torso, which could
fire either slug rounds or cluster rounds. Rounding up the armaments are three
Large Pulse Lasers, which are useful at any range. This configuration's heat
levels are kept under control by seventeen double heat sinks.
Intended for missions that involved being far from supply lines, Configuration
E has an ER PPC on each arm and one in the center torso as the main weapons,
backed up by 3 ER Medium Lasers on each arm. All the weapons are tied to a
five-ton targeting computer, making each shot more accurate. Even with a
whopping 26 double heat sinks, good fire control must be exercised in order to
maximize the effectiveness of the configuration while keeping heat under
control.
Configuration H features a Heavy Large Laser on each arm, for a powerful
mid-range punch. These are supported by a Gauss Rifle in the right torso, and
an Artemis-guided LRM-20 in the left torso. Direct-fire accuracy is improved
with the inclusion of a four-ton targeting computer, and 19 double heat sinks
help keep waste heat at decent levels.
Battle History:
The first known deployment of the Barsark was in late 3063 in Courchevel, when
the Third Bear Regulars routed the 7th Pesht Regulars and won the Trial of
Possession of the planet itself.
The other noteworthy deployment of the Barsark was that during the Ghost Bear's
reprisal against Clan Wolf, one of the Ghost Bear's key objectives was the
capture of the planet of Rasalhague. The First Rasalhague Bears, one of the
units sent to capture the world, deployed several Barsark Omnimechs against the
Second Wolf Lancers, who were the primary defenders of the world; in the end,
the Lancers retreated in tatters, and Rasalhague became a Ghost Bear Dominion
planet.
Deployment:
As a relatively new design, only the Ghost Bears have deployed the Barsark as
part of their forces, often paired up with either the Executioner or the
Kingfisher Omnimechs. Ghost Bear Mechwarriors who have successfuly completed
the Clawing Ritual are more likely to choose the Barsark as their 'mech of
choice, and would often have the "bear cowl" painted pale white, while the rest
of the 'mech is painted in other, darker colors.
Within the Ghost Bear Touman, the First Rasalhague Bears, notable for having
many former KungsArme soldier in their ranks, have become fond of the Barsark
Omnimech. Star Colonel Ragnar, the unit's leader and a former KungsArmer
officer himself, would sometimes use the Barsark if his other 'mech of choice,
the Kodiak, is unavailable.
