Overview:
When first introduced by Clan Wolf, the 65-ton Linebacker Omnimech was intended
to be the eventual replacement of the Timberwolf Omnimech, after the latter was
found to be unable to keep pace with its Starmates in running battles, which
could, of course, limit its effectiveness during the invasion of the Inner
Sphere. After the Refusal War, the Linebacker has found a home within Clan
Wolf in Exile and is tolerated by the Crusader Wolves because of their need for
equipment. Besides the Wolves, Clan Ice Hellion is the only other faction that
produces the Linebacker, but only uses them mainly for garrison duty.
In 3062, after suffering yet another defeat at the hands of Clan Wolf, a
brooding Khan Asa Taney caught sight of one of the Omnimechs while trying to
come up with a revenge scheme against the Wolves. At that point, an idea came
to him, and after summoning his Clan's scientists, instructed them to create a
"better" Linebacker, one that would be far superior compared to the 65-ton
version.
Due to the vagueness of Khan Asa Taney's instructions, as well as Clan Ice
Hellion's continued decline under his leadership, it took three years and
Taney's removal from Khanship for the Clan's scientists to create the so-called
"better Linebacker"; a 60-ton Omnimech known as the Wildcat.
Capabilities:
Named after an American Football offensive formation (see wikipedia for
details), the Wilcat is five tons lighter than the Linebacker; however,both
'mechs have similar armor coverage and speed profile, although the Wildcat uses
a smaller 360 XL fusion engine. However, the Clan Ice Hellion scientists opted
to only use the minimal amount of double heat sinks (10) in the Wildcat's base
configuration, leaving the Omnimech with 23.5 tons of pod space to work with.
In its Primary Configuration, the Wildcat has a pair of ER PPC as its main
weapons, backed by a pair of ER Medium Lasers, a pair of SRM-4 launchers, and a
rear-mounted ER Small Laser. Sixteen double heat sinks help keep the waste
heat managable.
A good mix of long and short range capability, the Wildcat A has an LRM-15
launcher to soften up enemies from afar, and a pair of Large Pulse Lasers and a
pair of Medium Pulse Lasers for mid-to-close range combat. Two more double
heat sinks were added to help the 'mech relatively cool.
A workhorse role, the Wildcat B has a Gauss Rifle and an LRM-10 launcher for
long-range combat, backed up by a trio of ER Medium Lasers, and a Small Pulse
Laser.
A direct fire support variant, the Wildcat C has a pair of ER Large Lasers and
an Ultra AC/5 as its main weapons, backed up by a pair of ER Medium Lasers, and
a Micro Pulse Laser. A total of fourteen double heat sinks help keep the waste
heat in check.
Wildcat D is a committed close-combat specialist, with an Ultra AC/20 as its
main weapon. This is backed up by an SRM-6 launcher and three Medium Pulse
Lasers.
Wildcat E features a pair of ATM-6 launchers as its main weapons, which are
capable of firing ammunition for long, medium, and short ranges. Supporting
these weapons are an ER PPC, two ER Medium Lasers, and a Micro Pulse Laser.
Effective against enemy vehicles and aircraft, the Wildcat F has two LB 5-X
Autocannons that are capable of firing both solid rounds and cluster
ammunition. Three ER Medium Lasers and an SRM-6 launcher provide close-range
backup.
In the same vein as the Wilcat A, the H configuration of the Wildcat features
an LRM-10 as its main long-range weapon, with a Heavy Large Laser, two ER
Medium Lasers, and two Heavy Medium Lasers for mid-to-close range combat. A
Targeting Computer helps counter the Heavy Lasers' accuracy issues, and even
with nine more double heat sinks added to the chassis for a total of nineteen,
this configuration is still prone to overheating.
Battle History:
In early 3066, the 78th Hellion Lancers clashed with the 4th Wolf Garrison
Cluster on Hoard several times, utilizing the new Wildcat Omnimechs as part of
their arsenal. Though their gains were limited, the Ice Hellion's Wildcats
(a.k.a. "better Linebacker" Omnimechs) acquitted themselves well in the
engagments.
Deployment:
So far, deployment of the Wildcat Omnimechs were limited to the 78th Hellion
Lancers.

My first attempt at posting an Omnimech design. As you can see, due to the sheer size, I had to split the Fluff and the Stats into two posts. I also used Microsoft Edge as my browser to post as well. Anyways, feedback (and suggestions) would be most welcome.
noticing an oddity. When a configuration has only a few DHS, its not reporting where they are located. When there are many DHS, it does say where they are located.
Most configurations are "Take Linebacker. Replace with bigger guns." A few seem to be, take line backer, add more gun. The F configuration is just anemic in my opinion.
General trend, I think the configurations are too close to the original. A tendency towards lessons learned, and new technologies to be incorporated seems lacking.
Interesting; I just noticed that DHS quirk as well. Maybe it's an SSW thing.
Your assessment does echo my idea for this Omnimech, although my plan was more like "Take Linebacker;
replace with more useful guns". Hence, almost resembling the original, albeit with minor improvements.
Eh, but to be frank you would have to make the conscious decision NOT to improve on the Linebacker and it's variants. As for myself, I think it's okay but nothing really "jumps" out at me.
It seems strange to me that quite of few variants have what clanners would regard as extravagant amounts of ammunition. I guess we can chalk that up to lessons learned.
I would like to point out that the F variant only has engine in the side torsos. This seems a bit dangerous to me.
Overall, I like the design enough to put in my personal files.
